#songbender part 27 – Roni Size – Brown Paper Bag
oh wow, it’s been a while. again. ah well.
I have to confess i had a different song in mind for this next one, but I decided to rather go classic. So here you go. If you’ve been affiliated with the DnB genre at all 25 years ago, you MUST have heard this one somewhere, sometime. 100%, guaranteed.
This AFAIK is considered one of the cornerstones of dnb, at least of that sub-genre that so-called “regular” music listeners can also absorb. Now, as you can probably tell, I’m not a fan of these people, and could care less, and usually I tend to NOT like the overly popular songs (of any genre, mind you, especially pop) – but that’s not the point.
This is not a song I listen to often, for some unknown reason it’s not even on my car pendrive (DJ Shuffle, as some of you may know), and I can’t really say why. This is a great song. The upright bass sample, the layered drums, the vocal stuff (there are several versions out there of this one, instrumental, full, etc. etc., and a shitload of remixes also). So every time I remember to put it on, I realize that ffffffuuuuu, this is cool, this has a vibe and a groove and no fkin WONDER this was such a hit in its day.
Now, i’ll post this version which is the video edit, and normally I wouldn’t recommend these as the visuals will most likely take away from the audio if you’re a first listener, so if you can and want to, i’d skip looking at the video, and rather look at it once you are already familiar with the tune. It’s much better that way, believe me! Of course, it may just be me, but I tend to get distracted if a video is good (or bad, for that matter) and can not really focus a 100% on the actual song. Which is bad.
Look up Roni if you can, because he has had a few absolutely awesome tracks in his day. I would think this was the biggest one of them all – but can’t say for certain.
Anyway, please enjoy. I’m planning a special “episode” pretty soon, so check back in a few decades, maybe you’ll catch it.
