#songbender part 55 – Orbital – Choice

Well hello again ladies and gentlemen, it’s been like 30 minutes since i posted the last post, haa haa haa. yeah. it’s a shame. i know. nevermind. noone is interested. i need to

WAKE UP

in fact, the point behind me writing this right now is only the fact that i’m facing the biggest drama of the last 15 years of my music-writing career, meaning that the hard disk that all my projects, samples, instruments, and everything in the whole wide world was, well, has now just died.

maybe it just followed our family member, our dear dog who passed away this last week as well. i don’t know. i would forgive if that was the case though. but i guess it’s not.

nevermind.

i was actually just testing my own site just now, we’re at part 55, sometimes i honestly do not have an idea if i have covered a fav song before or not. well youknow. i’m old. and shit. and also an idiot. but still, i rely on so called technology to do this crap for me. so i was kinda like i already did this one before, it just came up today because of the war whereever. and i immediately thought well this is the exact thing we’re talking about here. and i definitely have done this before

and it, like, turns out i have not.

surprised pikachu face

geez, the fuck am i doing here anyway. well ok, if i’m gonna post like every 6 months then no wonder. but we still got to 55 parts. so if you still can find it and i covered this before already, then please tell wordpress and it’s search engine to fuck right off as i sure as hell couldn’t find it and

so i’m doing it (again, if).

oh and before anyone thinks so, there’s no fkin AI content in all of this ok? you can look it up if you want. you won’t, you lazy fuck, but trust me bro.

so here we go again. i sense like i’m running out of room, i’m not sure if there’s anyone following this series the way i imagined it (probably not) but the point is that we are still holding back the “really good ones”, whatever that may mean to you. you may think 70% of the ones so far were crap, so why bother. I say: OK, there’s plenty of taylor swift waiting for you! haa haa ha. no. not really. that’s bad, man, don’t do it.

so back to the point: this is from their iconic “Green album” (it’s because they did not actually have a title, so the community named them based on the colours of the album cover). it’s from 1991, YES, 1991. jeeezuz fkin krist. and it still sounds killer. and the songwriting is absolutely awesome. and they use speeches and movie lines and things! just like i do! i should fkin learn to write good tracks though. yeah. probably.

the samples are from this fkin punk band’s track

my dear reader, i stand in AWE that the Hartnoll brothers could hear their own song from this one. and i’ve been around punk hahh, yeah right.

but still.

From dehumanization to arms production
For the benefit of a nation or its destruction
Power is power; it’s the law of the land
Those who live for death would die by their own hands
Life is no ordeal if you can come to terms
Reject the system which dictates the norm
From dehumanization to arms production
For the benefit of a nation or its destruction
It’s your choice: peace or annihilation!

what a goddamn great song this is.

1 9 9 1

for fucks sake.

could you write something like this in 1991?

ok not the musically most interesting song Orbital has ever made, but you can hear the two brothers interacting on this one, one building upon the other, and the fact that they have background in jazz piano, it’s actually hearable. But, the most iconic Orbital tropes are right here, this is a TRUE orbital song, if you know them you recognize the regular things they always do, this is what i SOOOO LOVE about this shit man. I can tell. You show me an unknown track by the Hartnoll brothers and i will tell you that it’s by them. I can only hope one will do this with my tracks – oh what am i saying, of course i won’t (have this, also no cloud district for me).

but these guys know how to play off of each other, and even though i never was a fan of 4/4, this never ever came up with Orbital. this is just ORGANIC. this is how it’s supposed to be. It’s the early 90s. Noone does this. This whole style is not mainstream. Only people grinning in those obscure techno clubs have been exposed to (way worse) stuff like this. But it started then.

yeah. and it still sounds valid to this day. and this is why Orbital is one of the best, ever. The whole Green album is a masterpiece, even though i wouldn’t call it my favorite (and that is a whole another rabbithole to go down in which i will only do if i will feel like it. who knows.)

but hey.

it’s your choice.

peace! or annihilation, to all of you.
