#songbender part 43 – Hallucinogen – Shakey Shaker

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, it’s such a pleasure to welcome all ONE of you, according to the site statistics that i’m paying for. Well you never mind that, it’s not your problem, it’s just reassuring me that this shit is not for everyone, and it’s for a reason!

AAAAND with that curve, or KURWA as the polish say (don’t believe me? do some internet research, n000000b), so the point is that we, by which i mean I, of course, have quite neglected the real kinda 4/4 bangin kinda whatsername that is that it is called.

SO as a result we’re going into psytrance today, and I actually had a LONG time to think about it, should I introduce psy to those 1.5 persons that actually read this or not, and the reason for that was that if I just put something that I like and it’s psytrance, they may get a false idea.

Well, i’m happy to report dear lady who i have not heard about and the gentlemen who i still wish i had not heard about, so all 3 of you will be shocked to hear that actually psytrance is a thing and thank whatever GOD _YOU_ believe in, cause it was such a delight in the 90’s – early 2000’s, that we need to bring this here.

And i will cut to the chase right here: this is Simon Posford. Again. yes, the Shpongle guy. this was before he did that stuff. So he actually ONLY managed to do a world-class psytrance record as his first ever, and then follow up with a more sophisticated one, and then he got bored and made Shpongle. If you understood more than 60% of the words in the previous sentence, you then probably understand why psy is such a force here.

and i was actually lamenting on this for weeks: if i’m to introduce psy to this 0.6 person that is actually interested, should i go with the “interesting” song, or let’s start with the “hit” and then make our way up tot he interesting

and you know, the executive decision was to screw all of you. this is not a fkin training, right? so if you don’t like it, go listen to your fucking spotify, there’s loads of crap that you don’t listen to anyway. so don’t waste your time on me listening to 90s shit.

so i hope i will still manage to find the motivation to continue this and eventually get to every single interesting song in the world, for me at least, but for right now, with the psy topic, we are starting with a tough one.

and that’s because it deliberately changes from 4/4 to 3/4 in the middle, and does it at least 2 times. and we’re not even going to mention these little things about psy, which i think are the most important, that this is NOT GOA, this doesn’t have pure melodies, this is not for ENTERTAINMENT.

K?

this is for you, under the influence of substances, all legal of course, pf, so if we take a trance show, then the focus is on melodies and synth riffs and everything and you dance on the dancefloor with a smile on your face that this shit is so melodic and captivating and cool and

and with psy, after the same unnamed substances you kinda just stand there, making motions, and trying to guess that OK OK OK the gunners are over here, the sorta friendly people on this side, WHICH SIDE DOES THE MONSTER COME FROM? all of this while gritting your teeth and moving to the 4/4 as instructed.

get it now?

yeah, it’s exactly like that. there’s a reason that 90% of all psy is just a piece of crap, cause something from the above is missing. (this is of course is true to almost all genres, but since psy is a really niche thing, i need to mention this).

so there you go. Simon, at his best. fantastic song, throwing you from 4/4 to 3/4 only with the melody (did i mention melody does not have a big part in psy? yes, this is what i meant).

and if you happen to listen to this and/or some others, you will find that the keys to a good psy song is: it should be trance-like (well, DUH, right? it’s a sub-genre), it should be MONOTONE as FUCK, so no key changes, no cadence, no nothing, you remain where you started, and you bridge the gap with what? NOISE. and FX. and everything else. That’s what you do. but there’s noone who can do it like Simon did.

(and then he got bored and did Shpongle, which was like the perfect move ever, but this is not the point here)

so please pay attention to this one if you can. YES early 90s. YES not the assfucking kinda sound you get from your beloved Dua Lipa or whatever kids like these days. (btw you deserve it, all of you). So it’s not new. But in terms of creating a whole new genre, well, you fkin 12 year old PRODUCER with your fkin ipad, come back to me to brag about your BEATs if you can do 0.1% of this shit that our Simon did here.

I dare you.

But of course, this is again old man yelling at clouds. You young people are probably talented and wonderful, too bad noone cares, including me, and your stuff is just crap. Sorry. Prove me wrong. Haha.

thanks for reading, if you have, if not, whatever. see you next time.
